Editor’s Note

Welcome to this week’s Sustainability edition of Supply Chain Radar, where carbon credits get embedded, maritime levies wobble, and wind power is no longer a throwback idea. ♻️⚓🌬️

Amazon is scaling carbon insetting to help suppliers tackle Scope 3 at the source, while IMO carbon pricing faces political headwinds that could stall shipping’s Net-Zero framework.

👉 Scroll on for inset economics, levy politics, wind-powered freight, mineral risk maps, and the strategies redefining sustainable logistics.

Hormuz Tensions Send Oil Soaring ⛽🌍

Oil jumped roughly 8% after U.S.–Iran attacks and strikes near the Strait of Hormuz rattled markets. With about 20% of global crude flowing through the chokepoint, traders fear supply disruptions that could lift fuel prices worldwide. Even as OPEC+ pledged modest output increases, analysts say access to shipping lanes—not spare capacity—will determine price stability.

Amazon Doubles Down on Carbon Insetting ♻️📊

Amazon is expanding its Sustainable Exchange to offer lower-carbon fuel inset credits and super pollutant refrigerant destruction credits to suppliers. The move helps partners tackle Scope 3 emissions by funding renewable fuels and eliminating potent gases like methane and HFCs. Unlike offsets, these insets embed reductions within supply chains.

IMO Carbon Levy in Jeopardy 🌍⚓

Panama has co-sponsored a proposal at the International Maritime Organization that could effectively kill a planned carbon levy on shipping emissions, a major setback for maritime decarbonization. The move, backed by Panama and Argentina, would require renegotiating key elements of the Net-Zero Framework designed to fund cleaner fuels and slash sector emissions. Critics say this undercuts international efforts to price carbon and advance clean shipping.

Mining: The Next Supply Chain Bottleneck? ⛏️⚡

Allianz warns that surging demand for critical minerals—driven by EVs, renewables and AI—could strain global supply chains. Lithium demand alone may rise fivefold by 2040, while data center growth intensifies competition for the same materials. Geographic concentration and sustainability risks add further exposure.

LEGO Builds with E-Methanol 🧱🌱

The LEGO Group is integrating renewable e-methanol into its supply chain to slash fossil plastic use, sourcing fuel from Denmark’s Kassø Power-to-X facility alongside A.P. Moller - Maersk. The e-methanol feedstock can cut carbon footprints by up to 97% and supports LEGO’s goal to halve virgin fossil plastic in 2026.
